WHAT DOES IT COST?
I charge a flat rate (not hourly) based on complexity of the illustration(s), where it will be used, how many times it will be used, and how quickly you need it. The less reproduction rights transferred, the less complex the imagery, and the longer amount of time I have to do it the less it will cost. I go by the classic business model of: You can have it Good, Fast, Cheap. You can have only two of those three. It might help to fill out an estimate request form and send it to me.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO DO ORIGINAL ART?
The length of time it takes to complete a commissioned illustration depends on several factors: the number of illustrations, the complexity of each, and the responsiveness of the clients approval. Even the most tightest of deadlines can be met in most cases. A typical job of one half-page magazine illustration will take 4-8 business days from the first call to the final delivery of illustration. I understand how important it is to meet your deadline, and I will do everything I can to meet it.
WHAT'S A TYPICAL JOB PROCESS FOR DOING ORIGINAL ART?
Every job is different according to your needs, but this is how a typical job process is handled. After the initial contact I will work up an estimate with prices, approximate time table, and terms, this is either emailed as a PDF or faxed. Once that is approved, signed, and faxed or emailed back I will fax or e-mail sketched out concepts or thumbnails if necessary.
Thumbnail Stage
I create small sketches (thumbnail's) of 2-5 ideas if necessary for client approval. When this has been received and decided upon a direction I start a tighter drawing.

Tight Pencil Stage
I gather reference and work out the details in the illustration. Once the tight pencil is faxed or e-mailed to the client, they approve it with any changes. I then start the finished art or do color studies if necessary. |

Finished Art
Upon completion I will email you first a low resolution file for approval. Then a high resolution file is sent according to your file requirements. Depending on the file size of the finished piece(s) they will be e-mailed or downloaded it from my website. A special link will be emailed to you to download a 300-400 dpi, RGB, uncompressed, JPG file. This is now a much requested practice and to date has proven to be highly successful for accurate color, detail, and speedy delivery.

Application of Art
It all comes together when the Designer or Art Director puts it in place. |
